Main Bearing Unit for Wind Turbines with Gearbox

In conventional wind turbines the main bearings have to absorb the forces and bending moments coming from the rotor and have to protect the gear from the resulting deformations and shock loads.
This is ensured by a stiff bearing system. Many bearing arrangements realized in the past did not meet this requirement for stiffness. Numerous failures were the consequence with immense follow-up costs for rework efforts. The preloaded bearings of the MBU absorb shock loads and thus reliably protect the gear.
